SRP – Volunteer

Paul Shenton

The SRP are working with the Institute of Advanced Motorcyclists (IAM) in South Yorkshire to improve the skills of riders on larger capacity machines by offering a discount scheme for the nationally recognised ‘Skill for Life’ qualification, and the chance for riders to wear the prestigious Green Badge.  Paul Shenton, a volunteer with the Safer Roads Partnership, recently passed his IAM test and explains more about the training:

‘I’ve been a volunteer for South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership for about a year, I really enjoy meeting new people and have attended various events providing free advice to the public, but also work colleagues, family and friends.  I’ve also attended BikerDown, Eco-Driving, SharpRider and proceeded on to do ‘Skills for Life’ with the Sheffield Advanced Motorcyclists.  This was a great experience where I learnt a lot from my observer Mike Foster, from riding a bike confidently to riding safely in all weather conditions.  Through the sessions, I improved my observation skills, learnt about positioning and safe overtaking.  The group meet up at Meadowhall Retail Park every Saturday morning where we have a chat, a coffee and the opportunity to practice slow riding..  We then ride out to a café for breakfast/lunch, covering 80-100 miles as a round trip.  I now ride to work every day rather than just on warm sunny days, it’s a lot easier and more enjoyable than being stuck in traffic!’
