Protecting Your Property
Protecting your home is quite easy and does not have to cost a lot of money.
Firstly, you can protect your personal items and valuables for free by registering your property onto the Immobilise website.
Secondly, you can follow these simple Home Secure tips...
Good Quality Locks
Install good quality locks on doors and windows and make sure that you use them, even if you are only in the garden.
If you are looking for a locksmith, make sure that you use one who has met the three key criteria of being vetted, inspected and qualified. The Master Locksmiths Association has its own licensing scheme whereby its approved companies are vetted, undergo regular inspection to ensure quality and employ a locksmith with an exam based qualification. Use the search facility on the Master Locksmiths Association website to find a locksmith near you.
For more information and advice on fitting good quality locks, please see the attached leaflet.
Burglar alarms are an effective deterrent and can provide you and your family with peace of mind. Figures show that 60% of burglaries on homes fitted with a burglar alarm are unsuccessful so it really is worth investing in a home security system.
Good lighting is an excellent way to deter a thief. Fitting exterior lighting with dusk to dawn sensors is a good idea. These are light sensitive; they come on when it gets dark and turn off when it gets light. Using low wattage bulbs means that they can be a very cheap and effective security deterrent.
You can also use timer switches inside your home to make your lights come on when you are out so that your home appears occupied.
Keep Keys Safe
Always keep your keys in a safe place, out of sight and out of reach from windows and doors.
Do not answer the door to unexpected callers, they may be giving false or misleading details to gain entry to your property or obtain work. Always ask to see identification, or if you are not sure about or are not expecting the caller, do not open the door.
Protect your Garden
Your garden has a big role to play in deterring burglars. Lock away ladders, garden tools and other items that burglars could use to enter your home. Also make sure that any sheds, garages and outbuildings are adequately secured and any items stored within are marked and registered to assist in their identification if they are stolen.
